Announcement for the Third East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME 3)

The Third East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education (EARCOME 3) will be held in Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou in China in August 5-12, 2005. See
(http://euler.math.ecnu.edu.cn/earcome3/Announcements.htm)..

One of the important sessions at EARCOME 3 is the symposium on Technology and Teaching in Nanjing. You are invited to submit proposals to the symposium on the Technology and Teaching (Nanjing Session) at EARCOME 3. The sub-themes of the symposium are the following:

The symposium on Technology and Teaching provides an opportunity for participants to discuss how technology can be and is being used for teaching and learning mathematics and how it is connected to research from international perspectives. The focus of the symposium on Technology and Teaching is to find out how current and future technology shapes the new ways of teaching and how it impacts student creativity and understanding of mathematics. The themes proposed are:

1. The role of technology in mathematics teaching and learning - This theme intends to discuss the functions of the current technology in mathematics teaching and learning from historical and future development perspectives. In addition, it will address the advantages and pitfalls concerning technology in mathematics education..

2. Various approaches to integrating technology in teaching - The focus in this theme will be on pedagogic approaches in integrating technology in mathematics classroom and how different instructional approaches impact ways of teaching and learning mathematics. It also will include issues on design and configuration of technology, tools and tasks for technology, and accessibility..

3. The assessment for using technology - This theme is suggested in order to evaluate the effects of integrating technology. It is very important to design a series of valid and
reliable instruments that provide norms to assess the functions of integrating technology, and to provide a practical guideline to classroom teachers for using technology effectively..

4. The effects of using technology on students' understanding of math and achievement - This theme examines how technology integration enhances students' understanding of mathematics in a meaningful way and how this understanding influences their mathematics achievement..

5. Creativity and technology _ This theme focuses on the inquiry and creativity of integrating technology in developing mathematical activities and investigations that motivate students interests and engage them in interactive learning..

Call for Papers

We welcome proposals explicitly related to the five themes outlined above. All proposals will be reviewed by chairs of the symposium on Technology and Teaching. Proposals will be accepted until February 20 and information about the acceptance of papers will be available by March 20..

All submissions must be in English, the language of the conference. Papers should be written to a length between 1000 and 3000 words and no more than seven A4 pages including figures, tables and references. Text should be 12 point TIMES, single spaced. Papers should start with an abstract of up to 150 words. Details about paper format will
also be indicated in the message on the website about Call for Papers by the organizer of EARCOME 3..

Please send your paper simultaneously to the following chairs of Technology and Teaching (Nanjing Session): AN Shuhua (USA) and Noraini IDRIS (Malaysia)..

We look forward to receiving your proposal(s) and to meeting you in China..
